At Good for the Soul Food, we believe that food is more than just sustenance—it’s a celebration of culture, community, and connection. Founded by Karen Amaker, our food truck pays homage to the rich culinary traditions of soul food and Jamaican cuisine, serving up soulful classics .
About Me
My Story
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Karen Amaker grew up around food and began her culinary journey in her mom’s kitchen. Some of her earliest and fondest memories are baking a chocolate cake in her Easy Bake Oven, helping her mom make sweet potato pies, and making homemade mashed potatoes. Since then, Karen has continued cooking for her family and friends because food is her love language!
The joy of cooking and entrepreneurship is a part of Karen’s family’s DNA. Her mom was one of many who shared their culinary skills. Karen’s dad and former owner of Candy Land and The Smoke House was a food entrepreneur. His last venture before retirement and his untimely passing in 2022 was a food truck, Ray’s Ribs, which he owned and operated for over 20 years in Hartford, Connecticut. As a young adult, Karen saw firsthand what was needed to start, grow, and sustain a food business.
